Greatest Need

Towards Improved Students Access and Success

All the funding opportunities presented by the Foundation aim to positively impact student access and success. Access to and success in higher education remain a national issue of concern as the challenges of low participation and low student throughput rates persist.

At the Foundation, we recognise that factors influencing student access and success are extensive and multidimensional, as access to higher education is not merely about providing a place for a student at University, while success is not only about graduating from an academic programme. The latter is, however, relevant to individual students, institutions, and the higher education system.

Access is also affected by students’ social context including their socio-economic status, schooling, career guidance received, preparedness, literacy, family support, etc. Furthermore, political, and economic contexts that impact higher education in Namibia, its education system, policy and quality assurance and youth unemployment levels all affect access data. The same is relevant for institutional aspects such as academic (e.g., curriculum, pedagogy, teaching and learning, technology) and non-academic (e.g., finance, housing, student support services on campus, counselling, orientation) factors.

In turn, success also relates to the quality of the programmes and the teaching of these programmes and the skills and attributes with which students graduate.

However, with the funding opportunities we offer, we focus on the primary field of work that the University can have an impact on, namely, the development of teaching and learning, as these are areas of work that could improve educational outcomes within the higher education sector.

We also focus on increasing funding through our Bursary Programme to enable students to live above mere survival mode, and fully engage both academically and in campus life as these are considered vital for academic and social integration, and student success.

In alignment with the Namibian Government’s vision of facilitating increased access to high-quality tertiary education, the UNAM Foundation takes pleasure in confirming its continued commitment towards effectively managing a Bursary Programme, which has two components, as one of its core activities.

We appeal to donors to support this Bursary Programme as its impact goes beyond the provision of financial assistance. Supporting the Programme equites to investing in the future of Namibia through the development of a skilled workforce, producing innovative thinkers and compassionate leaders poised to drive positive change in our society. Together, let us empower next generations and build a brighter, more prosperous Namibia.

Our Bursary Programme Components

Corporate Bursary Funds with naming rights

We provide corporates and individuals the opportunity to structure and name their own bursary funds, which we manage on their behalf, enabling them to focus on their core business.

UNAM Students’ Financial Assistance Fund

The Fund provides essential support towards tuition, accommodation, learning materials and employability skills development, while it also caters for non-academic emergencies which could affect students’ academic performance.

Philanthropy Starts With You

The Foundation attracts philanthropic support from individuals, alumni, business organisations, industry leaders and the general community. Donations and gifts assist the University of Namibia to fulfil its core mission of supporting and promoting teaching, learning, community engagement and the pursuit of education and excellence in research. Through their contributions, donors impact lives by increasing access to higher education, promoting collaborative research and community engagement. The lives of students, researchers and the general community are so enriched.

Donations of all sizes and forms are vital, as every donation makes a difference. The University has many active and future programs in need of support. Part of the Foundation’s role is to link interested parties with units within the University for discussions on how investments could be made.

Our donors imagine a world where students can explore their full potential without being distressed about how they will pay for higher education. They want to make an impact and trust the Foundation to ensure that their investments into the future of Namibia is stewarded responsibly. We are both honoured and inspired by their faith in us and their expressions of philanthropy.
