Why Giving Matters
Education is one of the critical building blocks for sustainable economic development, as it is the acquisition and utility of knowledge that drives nations. However, financial exclusion from higher education prevents most Namibian students from accessing education due to unaffordable direct and associated education costs. These costs often differentially affect lower income families and learners, feeding a cycle of disadvantage.
Equally, public institutions of higher learning face severe challenges to sustain and expand quality services due to declining public education subsidies. Internationally, governments have traditionally covered the biggest part of higher education funding. However, this trend has changed over the decades with the share of private sources of funding of higher education increasing year on year. Namibia is no exception. Private funding comes from private households and private sector organisations, which channel millions of dollars to education. Donor funds have had, and continue to have, profound impacts on the provision of quality higher education across the globe as no institution of higher learning can grow and excel without a healthy mix of public and private funds. The same is true in the case of the University of Namibia.

Before the UNAM Foundation's support, Edward, a master's candidate, faced financial hurdles. The foundation covered his tuition, allowing him to excel in technology studies. Edward now collaborates with mentors, making strides in his academic journey.
Breaking Barriers: Pombili's Triumph in Education
Pombili, born in Angola during a tumultuous time, had to halt her studies due to financial constraints. The foundation settled her outstanding fees, enabling her to become the first in her family to obtain tertiary education. Pombili is now giving back to her community by rebuilding a kindergarten.
Nurturing Ambitions: Kachana's Financial Mathematics Pursuit
Kachana, a third-year Financial Mathematics student, faced financial strains in Northern Namibia. The UNAM Foundation covered her tuition, accommodation, and provided allowances. Kachana, now more focused, aspires to excel in her studies and become a successful professional.

In 2021, Prof Charles Okaehalam Foundation and UNAM Foundation joined forces in a transformative agreement aimed at supporting female students through bursary assistance. Since the inception of this partnership, the foundation has successfully sponsored the education of nine deserving female students. Prof Charles Okaehalam Foundation, driven by a vision of empowering Namibian women, recognizes the pivotal role education plays in fostering individual growth and societal advancement. Through their commitment to education, they not only uplift the lives of the supported students but also contribute to the broader goal of gender equality and empowerment in Namibia.

Before receiving support from the Prof. Chales Okeahalam through the UNAM Foundation, I, Kachana Marryclare Mowa, a third-year Financial Mathematics Bachelors (Honours) student at the University of Namibia, faced financial strain in covering tuition, accommodation, and allowances. Spending most of my life in the northern parts of Namibia, my parent, the breadwinner, struggled to sustain my educational expenses along with responsibilities for my older siblings' tuition fees. Discovering the foundation through a friend's recommendation and successful application, I received comprehensive support, including accommodation coverage for the second year, full tuition fees, book allowance, and general allowance.

The Angling Club supported a master student since 2021, studying Science in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences – by Thesis. The student has been persuing the Masters at Sam Nujoma Campus
Before the invaluable support from the Oranjemund Angling Club (OAC) through the Sam Nujoma Campus (SNC) and the UNAM Foundation, I, as an aspiring MSc student passionate about fisheries biology and conservation, faced substantial financial challenges. Hailing from a modest background, the hurdles of tuition fees, academic materials, and daily living expenses loomed large. The UNAM Foundation, facilitated by the OAC scholarship, became a beacon of comprehensive support, not only alleviating financial burdens but ensuring seamless academic processes.
The challenges of financial constraints, a significant obstacle before the Foundation’s intervention, were mitigated, enabling a focused pursuit of academic goals. This support played a pivotal role in my personal and academic development, fostering confidence and capability. Achieving significant milestones, such as completing academic requirements and submitting my thesis, became possible. The foundation’s aid not only facilitated education but also contributed to my personal growth, preparing me for success as a Fisheries Biologist.
Inspired by the Foundation’s support, my aspirations now revolve around contributing to sustainable fishery management and conservation. I aim to give back to my community by applying acquired knowledge and assisting fellow students. The turning point in my journey was the day I received the OAC scholarship, a moment of immense joy and relief. My gratitude to the donors and supporters knows no bounds—your generosity has not only transformed my life but has also kindled a desire to make a positive impact in my community.
